A Covenant Agreement between the Wesley Foundation of Kalamazoo and Lutheran-Episcopal Campus Ministries at Western Michigan University
As representative ministries of the United Methodist Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America we, the Wesley Foundation of Kalmazoo and the Lutheran Episcopal Campus Ministries at Western Michigan University, recognize that our denominational church bodies have entered into full communion agreements characterized by the following:
- a common confessing of the Christian faith;
- a mutual recognition of Baptism and a sharing of the Lord's Supper, allowing for joint worship and an exchangeability of members;
- a mutual recognition and availability of ordained ministers to the service of all members of churches in full communion, subject only but always to the disciplinary regulations of other churches;
- a common commitment to evangelism, witness, and service;
- a means of common decision making on critical common issues of faith and life;
As a way of bearing witness to these agreements we covenant to a common ministry at Western Michigan University in the following ways:
we will mutually recognize the leadership of one another's called spiritual advisors in all aspects of the life of the ministry.
we will offer various types of worship services throughout the week to accommodate the diverse needs of campus.
we will offer regular opportunities for the community to participate in the sacraments.
we will offer opportunities for studies of the scriptures, discipleship, and prayer.
we will cooperate to best serve the community's needs for pastoral care to ensure the spiritual, emotional and mental welfare of its members.
we will collaborate in service and mission to the local community through programs such as... , nationally, and internationally, through spring break mission trips and other opportunities provided through our denominations.
we will strive to engage in dialog with communities of other faiths to foster community and common service.
This common ministry will include but not be limited to the foregoing characteristics. As the ministry develops we pray that we will add to our cooperative efforts.
Through this joint ministry we seek to fulfill Christ's Great Commission by providing a broader, deeper, and richer witness to the WMU Campus community than we could otherwise do separately.
